To what extent do we suffer from vitamin D deficiency?

People who are not exposed to enough sunlight may experience a lack of it, unless they take care of sufficient intake through nutrition and especially supplements. For example, about 42% of the population of the United States suffers from vitamin D deficiency, with this number rising to 74% among adults, and 82% among people with dark skin.

Vitamin D deficiency is not necessarily noticeable, since the symptoms it produces are subtle and often imperceptible on a daily basis and may develop over years or decades. Adults with vitamin D deficiency may experience muscle weakness, bone loss, and an increased risk of fractures. In children this may cause delays in growth and softening of bones. Also, vitamin D deficiency may cause a reduction in the effectiveness of the immune system and increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
